CLINICAL HYPNOTHERAPY, PSYCHOTHERAPY

Most of us are familiar with the terms and work of a counsellor or psychotherapist. However few of us are familiar with the term Clinical Hypnotherapist. Therefore I have prepared this brief information pack on Clinical Hypnotherapy-Psychotherapy. I trust it will address some of the queries you may have in relation to it as a tool in the management of stress, pain, anxiety, etc. for you or someone you love.

Hypnosis has been in use for thousands of years. There is evidence to support the belief that Hypnosis and hypnotic suggestion was used by the Ancient Greek and Roman Civilisations - for therapeutic benefit - as far back as about the fourth Century BC.

What exactly is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness and heightened responsiveness to suggestion. It may be induced by a variety of methods and has been used in medical and psychiatric treatment.

Characteristics:

Most people can be easily hypnotised. The depth of trance however, will vary from a light state close to waking, to a much deeper state. Over 20%of clients are capable of entering a very deep state of hypnosis, however theraputic effects occur even in a light trance.

What does Clinical Hypnotherapy consist of?

Clinical Hypnotherapy is the use of some hypnotic techniques in conjunction with other Solution Focused Techniques including CBT, Parts Therapy, NLP, Psychotherapy, etc., for the health and welfare of the client.

Clinical Hypnotherapy can produce a deeper contact with one's emotional life, resulting in some lifting of repressions and exposure to buried fears and conflicts. This effect lends itself to medical and educational use.

Medical uses:

Clinical Hypnotherapy - Psychotherapy has been used to treat a variety of physiological and behavioural problems. It can alleviate pain, including back pain and pain resulting from burns and cancer. It has been used by obstetricians as the sole analgesia for normal childbirth. Hypnotherapy is sometimes also employed to treat physical problems with a possible psychological component e.g. Raynaud's syndrome (a circulatory disease).

Many behaviour difficulties such as, overeating, substance abuse, panic attacks, fears, phobias, anger management insomnia and smoking are treated effectively with Clinical Hypnotherapy.
